I’ve been working in North Yorkshire for most of my veterinary career, mostly at James Herriot’s old surgery in Thirsk, but latterly in the quaint market town of Boroughbridge, where I can continue the Herriot ethos and, every day, I treat all creatures great and small. Anne, my wife is also a vet, so evening conversations over tea often revolve around patients – there’s no getting away from animals.
I have loved the process and experience of writing books and I also contribute two weekly columns for national newspapers, allowing me the reflect on the animals and owners I’ve been dealing with each week.
Outside of work, I’ve competed for Team GB at Long course duathlon and middle distance triathlon and now I spend as much time as I can ski mountaineering – there’s not much in Yorkshire but I try and visit the alps whenever I can. My biggest challenge was completing the epic team endurance ski race, The Patrouille des Glaciers, from Zermatt, under the foot of the Matterhorn to Verbier in 2018.
Our two boys are following in the family footsteps, currently trialling for GB squads and working hard at school. We have an energetic Jack Russell and two rabbits – Luna and Boris!
Life is busy at the moment, but life is good!
